What is Functional Medicine?

Functional medicine is a form of healthcare focusing on finding and addressing the root causes of disease and illness rather than treating symptoms. This approach views each individual as unique and considers the genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors contributing to their health issues. Functional medicine practitioners combine conventional medical practices and alternative therapies to create personalized patient treatment plans. By addressing the underlying imbalances in the body and promoting overall wellness, functional medicine aims to alleviate symptoms and prevent future health problems. It emphasizes the importance of a healthy diet, regular physical activity, stress management, and proper sleep as critical components of optimal health.

Does Functional Medicine Work?

Absolutely!

Functional Medicine is a healthcare approach gaining popularity due to its focus on lifestyle factors and their impact on overall health. This approach is based on scientific research that shows how lifestyle factors such as diet, sleep, movement, stress, and relationships can significantly impact our health. Functional Medicine practitioners aim to identify the root causes of health issues by addressing these lifestyle factors. By doing so, they can help patients achieve sustainable health outcomes. Clinical research has shown that this approach can improve various conditions. While conventional medicine still has its place for short-term problems such as acute infections or surgery, many patients seek alternatives to this system. Functional Medicine's holistic and personalized approach is becoming increasingly popular.

What can I expect at my visit?

Your initial consultation will be approximately 60-90 minutes long. We will take the time to listen to your medical history, lifestyle, and symptoms to understand your condition thoroughly. We understand the importance of not dismissing your observations or feelings, as they can provide valuable insight into your chronic medical condition.  During your appointment, our experienced medical providers, with your permission, will conduct a nutritional physical exam and a biochemical analysis on the SECA scale.

To accurately diagnose and treat your condition, we will utilize state-of-the-art lab testing and scientifically proven methods.

Treatment will include a customized nutritional and lifestyle guide, supplements, and medication if necessary. We aim to get to the root of your condition and work with you to develop a plan to help you achieve optimal health and well-being. We are committed to helping you lead a happier and healthier life by combining our medical training and knowledge with a patient-centered approach.

Do I need to prepare for my appointment?

Yes. To ensure optimal medical care and effective communication with your healthcare provider, you must prepare for your appointment by completing all necessary tasks beforehand. One critical step is to complete the health history questionnaire in full detail, which typically takes around 60 minutes. This questionnaire provides your provider with essential information about your medical history, current health status, and any medications or supplements you take.

Additionally, it is essential to electronically sign all requested documents, such as consent forms and insurance information, to streamline the check-in process. By completing these tasks in advance, you can ensure that you receive the best possible treatment and have sufficient time with your provider. Finally, if you have any medical records, lab tests, or other relevant documents, it is advisable to email or fax them to the office ahead of time. This information can help your provider make informed decisions about your care and improve the accuracy of your diagnosis and treatment plan. If you need assistance with these tasks, please get in touch with the office for help.

Does The Well Unscripted treat children?

The Well Unscripted is a medical practice that provides healthcare services to individuals of all ages. When it comes to treating children, the practice does accept patients as young as 13 years old.

Do you accept insurance, Medicare, or Medicaid?

Our services are not covered by any health insurance plan, Medicare or Medicaid. However, you may be able to submit or use FSA/HSA (Flex Spending Accounts and Health Savings Accounts).

Why do you not accept insurance?

At The Well Unscripted, we pride ourselves on offering a highly personalized care model that prioritizes an unhurried approach. Our dedicated providers invest significant time both before and after a patient visit to ensure that your visit is tailored to your individual needs and that your treatment plan is continually updated. In contrast, insurance-based practices typically allot 15-30 minutes with patients, as they must see a larger volume of patients to cover expenses and salaries.

Health care clinics who bill health insurance companies must become participating providers. This involves signing a contract that gives the insurance company control over the services offered and their associated fees. Unfortunately, insurance companies tend to prioritize traditional healthcare methods that rely on medication and surgery, rather than preventive or wellness services. However, our practice follows the functional medicine model, which focuses on identifying and addressing the root causes of symptoms through personalized nutrition and lifestyle recommendations.

As a participating provider, it is necessary to accept the fees established by the insurance company, regardless of their reasonableness or applicability to our practice. These fees typically only cover the cost of the most basic care. Furthermore, participating providers are required to accept discounted fees for their services and cannot bill the patient for the difference between their fee and what the insurance company will pay. This often results in the clinic having to write off a significant portion, sometimes up to 50% of the provider's fee for service.

Unfortunately, to provide the high-quality comprehensive care we pride ourselves on, we have found that we cannot be participating providers in insurance networks. Our focus on providing evidence-based individualized treatment plans, nutrition, and thorough care does not align with the limitations and restrictions imposed by insurance companies.
Does Insurance cover labs?

Functional medicine is a patient-centered healthcare approach focusing on addressing the root cause of illness rather than treating symptoms.

As such, it places a strong emphasis on personalized and comprehensive testing, including advanced laboratory tests. Unlike traditional medicine, which often relies on insurance coverage for laboratory testing, functional medicine does not accept insurance for specialty labs, however, we can order basic labs though your insurance.

This is because insurance companies typically only cover basic tests and have strict guidelines that limit the number and type of tests that can be ordered.

Additionally, insurance companies may not cover the cost of tests that are not deemed medically necessary, even if they could provide valuable insights into a patient's health.

By not accepting insurance for labs, functional medicine practitioners have the freedom to order a wider range of tests and provide more individualized care for their patients.

What type of lab test do you use and how many are required?

At our health clinic, we understand that identifying the underlying causes of health issues is crucial to effective treatment. To achieve this, we utilize a range of lab tests tailored to each patient's specific situation.

The number of recommended tests varies depending on the number of concerns a patient is experiencing and the duration of their symptoms. Typically, we suggest 1-4 lab tests over 3-6 months. The required samples for testing can include saliva, urine, hair, and stool, depending on the test type.

Most tests are easily self-administered at home using convenient test kits provided. Some tests may require a blood draw, which our team will guide and assist patients in coordinating. By identifying the underlying causes of health issues, we can provide targeted, effective treatment plans that address the root of the problem.

Are lab tests and supplements included in the initial consultation?

It is essential to understand that consultation fees do not typically cover the cost of lab tests or supplements. These expenses are typically paid directly to the suppliers or labs. However, providers may recommend necessary supplements and which lab tests suit a particular case. This can help patients make informed decisions about their healthcare and budget accordingly.

The cost of lab tests and supplements can vary widely depending on the specific tests or supplements needed. For example, a basic blood test may cost around $50, while more complex tests can cost several hundred dollars. Similarly, the cost of supplements can vary based on the brand, type, and dosage. Patients should discuss these costs with our providers and research options to find the most cost-effective solutions for their individual needs.

Understanding the costs associated with lab tests and supplements can help patients make informed decisions about their healthcare and budget accordingly.
